COMING TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE: "SOLESOLEVAKI"

The South Australian Fijian community love nothing more than coming together to help each other; to celebrate their culture, their language and their heart for family. In the Fijian language this concept of coming together to champion and support each other is known as solesolevaki. The Festival State Rugby 7’s tournament is a time to celebrate coming together.

THE HISTORY OF THE TOURNAMENT

The journey of the FASA Rugby Sevens Tournament began in 2015. The Fiji Association South Australia (FASA) committee, led by President Jerry Satala and Vice President Tevita Naroba, started to talk about ways in which the 40th anniversary year of FASA could be celebrated. The community has rallied together many times to support their families and friends back home in Fiji, welcomed Fijian tertiary students, sports teams and special guests to Adelaide, developed a Fijian Radio Broadcast, held classes teaching Fijian language, tradition and culture and celebrated their Christian roots and faith in monthly interdenominational Church services.

After much discussion of different ideas, the FASA Committee saw it as very fitting to celebrate its 40th anniversary by initiating and developing a high quality annual Rugby Sevens tournament in Adelaide. The first FASA Rugby Sevens Tournament took place on 10 October 2015, which coincided with Fiji Independence Day. The tournament, held at the North Torrens Rugby Club, included local and national teams and two teams from Fiji. The Tournament was followed by an Island Night, which included entertainment from well known Fiji band Senibuasala Serenaders led by legendary Mr Peni Cavuilagi.

Based on the success of the inaugural tournament, it was held again in 2016 with generous support from sponsors and attracting a large crowd on the day to watch quality teams in action. In 2017, following further research and consultation on how to develop the Tournament more, a separate entity was formed: FESTIVAL STATE RUGBY 7’s INC. This body was registered as a non profit organisation and is managed by  a Committee which is currently led by President Usieli Kamikamica (Vili). The Committee wishes to acknowledge all those who have been part of the Festival State Rugby Sevens Tournament journey both past and present.
